Athletes are turning to intravenous vitamin therapies in attempt to boost performances
- Leanne Delap Special to the Star
We all know how essential exercise is for our musculoskeletal system, neurological system, and of course our cardiovascular system. However with these benefits come physiological stresses that may leave our cells dehydrated and depleted of essential vitamins and nutrients. As a result, recovery is prolonged, and may even hinder our next athletic performance.
Intravenous (IV) vitamin infusions may be the solution. Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) have traditionally used IV vitamin therapy for the treatment of chronic pain, fatigue, and cancer to name a few. When compared to intaking vitamins via oral capsules, infusion directly into the vein allows for better absorption by the cell, as the vitamins bypass the gastrointestinal system and are deposited directly into circulation.
Along with exercise depleting our cells of these essential vitamins and nutrients, particularly the vigorous training endured by athletes, it is also very taxing on the immune system. The advantage of using a cocktail of vitamins is that it gives NDs the flexibility to add nutrients to the bag that will not only help speed recovery from damage due to exercise as well as from illness, but also assist in the prevention of illness. Vitamin C and Zinc, for example, are very commonly used. In turn, the faster an athlete can recover and the better he/she feels overall, the bigger improvements that will be seen in his/her performance. Finally, IV vitamin infusions take time to drip. This forces athletes who are used to a fast-paced routine to take a few moments to sit down and relax.
Note: IV vitamin infusions can benefit an extensive range of medical conditions and are not exclusive to athletes.
